The Wide and Narrow Gate

When Mark Rogers was teaching “Why would a loving God send people to hell?” at our Difficult Issues series a couple of weeks ago, he left me with an image that won’t go away. In Matthew 7:13-14 Jesus said,

“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.”

Here is the picture: A world of almost 7 billion people most of whom are headed towards the wide gate that leads to destruction. Why? Because the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction. Why? For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life? Why? Because those who find the narrow and hard way are few.

That is a sobering picture. I found Mark’s extended teaching on hell very sobering, and healthy for my soul, and extremely motivating to my evangelism. We don’t like to think of hell, even when it comes to our own evangelism. But, it is true. There is such a reality as hell, it is horrible, and most of the people we know are being blindly herded towards this wide and easy gate.

What are you going to do about this? Are you going to let those you know blindly continue towards this wide and easy gate, or are you going to warn them of the destruction that lies ahead?
