Graveyards and Gospel

Right across the street from where we host our annual meeting for Entrust Foundation is a 15th century Church of England church called Saint Thomas a Becket. It’s built of local stone, old gated church pews, and it might be able to fit 100 people. All of the history is great, but what I find fascinating is the church graveyards that surround the church building.

The dates of those graves are not only fascinating, but the healthy reminder that our lives are but a vapor. I think it is a good thing to be reminded of your mortality every time in walk into a church building. It is a healthy reminder of the hope we have in the gospel and a healthy reminder to make the most of our short lives. I think it is healthy for the Christian life, it is healthy for evangelism and mission, it is healthy for marriages and families.

I think we should petition the town of Bristol (not England) to see if we can build a cemetery around our church building.
What do you think?
