God’s grace was evident throughout our journey to the Philippines. In Chicago an American Airlines agent checked us in as a group and even checked our bags all the way to Manila. We thought we were going to have to claim our bags in L.A. and recheck them at the international terminal. We had a similar experience in L.A. when a Philippines Airlines agent checked us in as a group. Although the flight was extremely long, it was literally smooth sailing all the way.
Everyone has done fairly well with the 14 hour time difference. When we landed in Manila on Tuesday morning at 5:30 a.m. it was 3:30 p.m. Monday afternoon in Kenosha.
Paul Caampued met us at the airport with Mercedes Compton and two men from his leadership team; Pastor Armand and Pastor Jeff. In route to the hotel we stopped at the building site to get an understanding of what tomorrow will look like. All of the concrete beams and the second floor have been poured. We will likely start tomorrow by cleaning up the job site, mixing cement, putting up concrete block, and begin some electrical wiring. The team is fairly confident that we can get a great deal done over the next 10 days. We will try to include a picture everyday of the progress of the building.
The economy in the Philippines is typical of a developing country in Asia. There is much over-crowding, many people have squatted on vacant land and built homes out of whatever they could find. These developments become their own communities called shanty towns. Th
is extreme poverty – which would typify the majority – is set alongside an extremely wealthy upper class. This probably is the result of corruption in the government and exploitation of the laborers. The streets are busy, many people on feet, traffic everywhere which results in a great deal of pollution. Besides walking, the main mode of transportation is the moped or motorcycle and the Jeepne – an oversized Hurst with two long wooden benches in the back.
We have planned early morning devotions as a group and a time of fellowship in the evening where team members will be sharing their testimonies, we will worship God together and spend some time in prayer.
Please pray for…
1. A good nights sleep for everyone so that we wake up well-rested and full of strength for tomorrow. A few of the team members had a game of pool basketball to cool.

2. Wisdom for Ross Bullin who is helping to organize the construction site. Wisdom for developing a plan, for identifying priorities on site, for putting together smaller work teams, and for planning of materials at the site.
3. Fellowship as we gather together in the morning, work together on the job site, and gather together in the evening. Please pray that there would be a great deal of mutual ministry among the team, that we may experience God together, and be a source of encouragement for one-another and for the pastors in the Philippines.
