Toxic Red Sludge Under Our Wheels!

Greetings from Hungary,

Did that subject line conjure up images of rubber tires dissolving in toxic red mud and rescue attempts to save us from creeping slug? Yes, much has been happening in Hungary these days, and especially with the Danube river where I often go for exercise.

Actually, “Our wheels” were that of my bicycle and of my friend, Sergei, not that of a car. And what our rubber tires touched was not red mud, but a tube where Danube river water and diluted toxic mud was flowing through to a processing-analyzing vehicle. So, although the subject line is accurate it is sensationalized to make a point. The media also has sensationalized the danger and extent of the chemical spill. So, although Sergei and I bike many miles along the Danube there is no immediate danger to us, nor to our drinking water.

Don’t pray for our safety from the “toxic red slug.” Do pray for the Hungarian families near the location of the spill who have lost loved ones, and whose livelihood is at stake. Do pray for our (Yulia and I) ministry to nationals like Sergei and his wife Svetlana, who soon could give leadership to a ministry trying to reach over 150 million people and having one of the largest Muslim populations in the world.

Thank you for Praying!

David and Yulia (Tosha and Evan) Beatty
