Two Ways to Live - TIPS

The way we get skilled and confident in sharing the gospel is by practicing our presentation of the gospel, or in this case Two Ways To Live (2WTL). I would encourage you to share the 2WTL with 10 non-Christians. Tell them that you are learning how to share the gospel and you have been given an assignment to share the gospel with 10 people.

If you want to learn more and get even better, come to our evangelism equipping class – Called To Witness 1 – this Saturday, May 16th from 9:00-11:00 at the church building. We are going to be learning about and practicing 2WTL. I thought I would end this series with some practical tips on how to share 2WTL.

What to AVOID

1. Avoid using the preprinted tract. You can use it, it is very good, I just prefer the personal touch of drawing out yourself. Maybe the best thing to do is draw it out for them and then give them the tract so they can think about it some more.

2. Avoid Christian jargon. Instead of using Christian jargon just use the definitions. Instead of sin, talk about rebellion. Instead of redemption, tell them Jesus died in our place. Instead of repentance, tell them they must stop living outside of God’s reign and authority.

3. Avoid talking down to non-Christians. Yes, we must presume that people no longer have knowledge of the God of the Bible, but that doesn’t mean we have to demean them. Get into a conversation. Ask what they know about God, and then fill out their understanding.

4. Avoid being side-tracked from getting to the gospel. We can get sidetracked about the reliability of the Bible, or evolution, or by this secular documentary or book. We must get to the gospel. The gospel is the power of God to everyone who believes.

5. Avoid memorizing 2WTL word for word. You know the gospel. You know the storyline of the Bible. Tell it in your own words, with warmth, belief, and affection.

Where to FOCUS

1. Focus on a personal presentation of the gospel. Share 2WTL on a napkin or piece of paper to make it more personal and memorable.

2. Focus on dialogue. Instead of just rehearsing 2WTL from beginning to end without coming up for air, engage them in conversation.

3. Focus on clarity. Stop often to see if they understand, to clarify, to ask if they have questions, and to gain their affirmation.

4. Focus on the pictures of 2WTL. If you remember the sequence of the pictures you can remember the sequence of the storyline of the Bible and 2WTL.

5. Focus on being yourself. Relax, enjoy yourself, tell the gospel in your own words, tell them about your sin and your own experience of God’s saving grace.

6. Focus on understanding. If they are confused about a certain point or if they deny the reality of a certain truth, then insert personal illustrations, or other gospel illustrations, or verses to help their understanding.

7. Focus on the Holy Spirit. God will be with you. He will be present and He will be active. Pay attention to what God is doing and what He wants you to do as you share the gospel.

8. Focus on prayer. Pray, pray, and then pray some more that God would save them.

All of this, by His grace, and for His glory.
